In October 2019, a team from Southwest Community Church (Kamloops) including Paul Fletcher of Riverside Energy Systems travelled to Kapsowar for 2 weeks to assist the hospital by installing a 25 kW rooftop grid-connected solar PV system. The system was designed by Riverside Energy Systems using equipment supplied by Choride-Exide, a Kenyan solar distributor, and paid for by several generous donors through Samaritan's Purse Canada.
Due to Kapsowar's location near the equator, the solar system energy harvests will be excellent, producing 25-30% of the hospital's annual electricity needs. At present electricity rates, ongoing annual savings of $10,000 - $11,000 USD will be realized; equivalent to two full-time nursing salaries. This will translate to better patient care and reduction of the hospital’s environmental footprint.
